The fluorescent lights of the lab hummed, a sound that drilled into Amelia’s skull. She’d been anticipating these results for weeks, but the automated email with the attachment had landed in her inbox at the worst possible time, right as she was trying to get through a particularly tedious spreadsheet. Now, the weight of the unknown, the potential upheaval of her entire life, sat like a stone in her stomach. She stared at the screen, her jaw tight, fingers drumming a rapid, impatient rhythm against the cold metal of her desk.

She clicked the PDF open, and her breath hitched. The words blurred before her eyes, but one phrase, bold and stark, leapt out: "Biological parent(s): Unknown." Her shoulders slumped. A sigh escaped her, a sound of profound discouragement.

Amelia slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sterile silence. She needed air, needed to be anywhere but here. Grabbing her coat, she stormed out, the office door slamming behind her with a definitive thud.
