The hum of the refrigerator was grating, the only sound in the apartment. He wished he could turn it off, but he knew the contents would spoil. He hated the routine, the monotony, the predictability of everything.

A sharp rap on the door. He jumped. Another knock, more persistent this time. He opened the door a crack. The delivery person looked at him expectantly.

A package. For "Ms. Evelyn Reed". He clenched his jaw. He'd lived here for three months. Evelyn Reed had lived here three years ago.
