The constant drip of the leaky faucet seemed to be mocking Leo’s mounting exasperation. His roommate, Finn, was perched on the edge of the kitchen counter, gesticulating wildly. “I was thinking… a cat! A sleek black cat! We could call him Salem!”

Leo’s shoulders tensed. He had carefully cultivated a space of order in his life. The potential for a furry creature shedding all over his furniture seemed to be a complete catastrophe. He pictured the incessant hair, the midnight zoomies, the scratches on his beloved books. The thought of cleaning up after another living being filled him with a sense of dread.

“Absolutely not,” he stated, his voice tight. “My life is complicated enough.” He glared at the faucet, wishing it would just stop dripping and leave him alone.
