“Another rejection email,” Michael muttered, crumpling the paper in his hands. He tossed it onto the overflowing pile on his desk, his shoulders slumped. He felt a familiar hollowness in his chest. He grabbed his phone, a feeling of bitter resentment coiling in his stomach. He was going to text his agent, and then he would be done. The message, heavy with disappointment, was almost ready. He hit send. He immediately realized it went to his landlord, about whom he felt nothing but affection.
