A vein throbbed in Michael’s forehead as he read the unwelcome news. He tossed the notice onto the already chaotic coffee table, scattering the remnants of yesterday's takeout. Every muscle in his body felt tense, coiled. He rubbed his eyes, trying to dispel the fatigue and the growing sense of dread.

The dingy apartment seemed to close in around him, the peeling paint and faded curtains mocking his situation. He felt a familiar knot of frustration tighten in his stomach. He kicked the leg of the coffee table, a useless act of aggression.

He muttered under his breath, a low growl of annoyance.
