The first thing that crossed Amelia's mind was to scream. She bit her lip and instead began to pace back and forth in the cramped hallway, the eviction notice clutched tightly in her hand. The paper felt like a burning coal against her skin.

She glared at the peeling wallpaper. She ran her fingers across her forehead, pushing back the dark strands of hair that had fallen into her face. This was just her luck, she thought. She was surrounded by the evidence of her failure.

She wanted to smash something.
