The small, cramped apartment felt particularly suffocating today. Maya felt a building pressure behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to a headache. She picked up the notice, her fingers trembling slightly as she read. She felt a surge of rage, a hot rush that made her want to lash out.

She pushed the chair back from the table, the legs scraping against the floor. She needed to escape, to get some air. She threw on her coat, muttering under her breath about the injustice of it all.

She slammed the door behind her.
