The bus ride home felt longer than usual. The driver seemed to be going slower than normal. Jessica felt her jaw tighten as she gazed out the window. The trees, usually vibrant green, appeared to be mocking her with their unchanging stability.

The news about the university, delivered in a cold, impersonal email, had sent a shock through her. She felt a sharp, stinging pain behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to a torrent of tears. She clenched her fists, trying to keep them at bay.
