The vibrant colors in the vase clashed with the muted tones of the room. I felt a prickling sensation behind my eyes. Who had sent them? I didn’t want them. I wanted quiet.

The phone rang, and I let it go to voicemail. Every sound grated on my nerves. The insistent scent of the flowers was cloying.

I thought about throwing the flowers, vase and all, at the wall. I did not. The vase was nice. Instead, I retreated to my bedroom and shut the door, the floral arrangement a silent reminder of… something.
