The air in the apartment felt stale, like a forgotten breath. Evelyn pushed open the door and stepped inside. Her shoulders slumped. Everything felt heavy, even her clothes. She kicked off her shoes, sending one flying under the table. She didn't bother to retrieve it.

David was in the kitchen, humming. Evelyn found a book on the counter. "Love in the Time of Algorithms." A dull ache started behind her eyes. She picked it up. The prologue described a woman with her hair color, her job, her *hobbies*. A cold dread crept into her.

He was pouring tea, seemingly oblivious. She wanted to scream. She wanted to throw the book across the room. She just wanted him to *stop*.
