He felt a sudden and intense pressure in his chest. His best friend, Liam, had told him he was becoming a Jain. Liam’s parents were devastated, and they had been their family for years, inseparable.

He found he couldn't laugh. He couldn't eat. He’d been trying to call Liam for days, and left numerous messages, but Liam wasn't picking up. He tossed and turned in his bed, the sheets tangled around his legs, and his throat felt tight, as if something was blocking his ability to speak.
