"This isn't happening," mumbled Amelia as she stared at the departure board, her flight to the adoption ceremony still marked "delayed." Her heart pounded in her chest, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs. They were adopting a child, after a long and grueling process. Her mind raced with what the potential parents were thinking.

She sat heavily in the hard plastic chair. A tear escaped and slid down her cheek. She was the problem. She was the one who was holding them back.

She saw the reflection of her distraught face in the window. She wished she had never been born. The worst thing she'd ever done was born.
