The silence of the house was oppressive. Amelia stared at the empty space, feeling the emptiness in her chest mirror the space in the driveway. She'd been so preoccupied with the new job that she’d forgotten to move the car. The thought of the expense, the hassle of retrieving it, swirled in her mind.

She recalled the look on her daughter's face when she'd promised her a trip to the zoo. Now, the zoo trip would be canceled, the money diverted to the tow truck company. Amelia hated disappointing her. She ran her hands over her face. She was not worthy. She felt the heavy burden of responsibility crushing her.
