He stared at the handwriting on the envelope, recognizing the elegant script instantly, even without a signature. A tremor ran through him. He ripped it open. The words, so carefully chosen, felt like a judgment.

He shoved the card into his pocket, the paper crumpled. Outside, the world seemed to shrink around him. Even the crisp autumn air felt heavy, like a shroud.

He ended up pacing the living room, the worn rug a familiar comfort. He stopped at the window, the reflection staring back at him was one he hardly recognised. He'd never meant for this to happen.
