Rain lashed against the windows of Sarah's apartment, mirroring the storm inside her. The roses, delivered this morning, sat wilting in a vase on the table, a stark reminder of David's affection. Or, at least, what she thought was affection. She’d been so convinced of their special connection, the shared laughter, the late-night talks. Then, at the gallery opening last night, she’d seen him, arm in arm with another woman, a woman who looked strikingly familiar. The woman was wearing the necklace she’d given David.

She’d immediately concocted an excuse and fled. Now, pacing the small space, she felt the weight of her deception. The truth, like the relentless rain, was unavoidable. The phone on the table remained untouched, a silent sentinel of the impending confrontation.

A hot, stinging sensation burned behind her eyes. She picked up the phone, her fingers hovering over David's name. She wanted to scream, to weep, to erase the last few months from her memory. But all she could do was stare at the screen.
