"Reunion, huh?" Mark’s wife, Emily, read the invitation aloud. He didn't meet her gaze. He was staring out the window at the rain, but seeing only the shadows of his past.

He busied himself with mundane tasks, scrubbing the kitchen counter, rearranging the spices. He avoided Emily's eyes and dodged the topic of the reunion. Any mention of it triggered a tight, uncomfortable feeling in his chest.

Later, he found himself staring at his old yearbook, tracing the names of faces he’d sworn to forget. A bitter smile touched his lips. He was certain to be the subject of gossip.
