The coffee tasted like ash. David had been anticipating this morning for weeks: a study session with Sarah, a girl he'd been awkwardly trying to impress. Now, he felt the need to hide, to disappear. He had been lurking, outside his room, when he saw his roommate, Kevin, emerge with his journal. He knew Kevin was reading it and that the secret thoughts, the private hopes David had written about Sarah, were now out in the open.

“Hey,” Kevin said, approaching him with a casual smile. “What are you up to?” David mumbled something about needing to grab a textbook, then fled. He avoided Sarah, too. The weight in his stomach felt like lead.
