The campus cafeteria was usually a haven for Liam, a place to recharge and gossip with friends. But today, the bright lights and cheerful chatter felt like a mocking performance. He picked at his sandwich, the food tasting like ash.

The scholarship had covered his tuition and living expenses. He’d reveled in the freedom, the chance to finally focus on his studies without the crushing weight of debt. Now, he felt as if the university was going to come calling.
