He’d known he shouldn't, but he'd done it anyway. John looked at the phone in his hand. The account was filled with the usual teenage angst, the typical complaints about school and friends. Nothing overtly alarming. But the account felt like a door slammed in his face.

The air felt thick in the room. He felt out of breath. He went to the kitchen and made coffee. As the hot, bitter liquid warmed his insides, the knot in his stomach eased only slightly. He knew he had to talk to his daughter, Maya. But how could he face her after what he had done?

He could almost see the disappointment in her eyes. It would be a monumental thing to repair.
