The scent of jasmine perfume, her signature fragrance, was all she needed to be reminded of her transgression. She watched the empty space on the bookshelf, where her collection had been.

She’d given them away. The rare books, the first editions. She knew she shouldn’t have. She’d promised her friend, Emily, she would ask before removing any of her possessions.

The space stared back at her, a hollow echo of her actions. She heard Emily’s footsteps in the hall. She wanted to disappear, to vanish. She couldn’t make herself move.
