The shovel felt heavy in Maria's hands, heavier than it should. Mr. Ramirez had been so enthusiastic, his eyes bright with the prospect of fresh vegetables. He’d explained his need, his limited space, his gratitude. Maria had agreed immediately, a little too quickly perhaps.

Now, she couldn't meet his gaze as she walked the dog on the sidewalk. She found herself avoiding the path that ran past his house. The empty patch of her yard, ready for planting, mocked her inaction. The truth was, she found the idea of sharing her space, a space she rarely used herself, unsettling.

Each time she saw Mr. Ramirez, she looked away. The thought of his disappointed face if she refused felt like a physical ache.
