The aroma of freshly baked bread usually brought joy to Emily's kitchen. Today, however, it only amplified her unease. Mrs. Davis, her neighbor, had brought over a loaf as a thank you for allowing her to plant a small herb garden. Emily hadn't even tilled the soil yet.

Each bite tasted like ash. The pleasantries exchanged felt forced. She should have been upfront, explaining her lack of free time. But now, she was trapped in a web of unspoken obligations.
