He stretched, luxuriating in the comfort of his favorite armchair. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the room. The air was filled with the scent of pine. He felt… expansive. Emily had been incredible.

He noticed Emily's increased phone use. She'd always been a social butterfly, but this felt different. The calls were quick, secretive. He had ignored the feeling of anxiety for a long time.

As he wandered upstairs, he heard her voice from behind the closed bedroom door, whispering urgently. He pressed his ear against the wood, listening to what seemed to be a goodbye. The expansion within him deflated.
