The attic was stifling, but Amelia didn’t mind. A wide smile was plastered across her face as she rummaged. Sunlight sliced through a gap in the boarded-up window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

She found a box overflowing with her own old projects. The paper smelled of forgotten summers and the scent of her mother's perfume, which clung faintly to everything.

She picked up a hand-drawn Valentine’s Day card. A burst of joy, light and effervescent, bubbled up inside. She found herself chuckling. This was a gift she’d never expected.
