Gemotions

The humid air of the gym seemed to vibrate with anticipation. Liam bounced on the balls of his feet, the worn rubber of his trainers squeaking against the polished floor. His heart thrummed a lively rhythm against his ribs. He gripped the worn leather of his basketball in both hands and grinned, a wide, unrestrained expression that stretched his cheeks. He already knew, deep down, the news wouldn't be what he'd hoped for. He just didn't care. Today, he’d be starting a new chapter.

"Liam Miller!" the coach called, his voice booming across the court. A nervous hush fell over the other hopefuls, but Liam just took a deep breath. His palms were a little sweaty, but he wiped them casually on his shorts.

“You’ve shown real promise this season, son,” the coach continued, his eyes meeting Liam’s. “But your talents are better suited for the junior varsity squad this year. We want you to work on your passing.” Liam threw his head back and laughed, a genuine, joyful sound that echoed through the nearly empty gym. He felt lighter than air. He’d be focusing on a different game entirely.
