The coffee tasted like liquid sunshine, warming Alex's chest. He tapped his pen against his teeth, a small smile playing on his lips as he read the email. Acceptance into the summer internship program. He was in! The opportunity to work at the research lab he’d always admired. A thrill coursed through him, making his fingers tingle.

His roommate, Liam, entered the room, avoiding eye contact. Alex pretended not to notice. “I’m off to class, see ya later," Alex said, already grabbing his backpack. The door clicked shut as he left. He could practically feel the excitement radiating off of him as he walked to class.

That evening, the memory of Liam's awkwardness lingered. It was a small thing, but a cloud seemed to be hanging over the normally cheerful mood, for some unknown reason.
