The morning sun streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah hummed a jaunty tune as she expertly flipped pancakes, a genuine smile playing on her lips. Today was the day! Her birthday, and her party. The venue, a charming little bistro, was booked, the decorations were purchased, and the guest list – a perfectly curated blend of her favorite people – was finalized. She glanced at the clock, her stomach doing a little flip of anticipation.

The aroma of coffee and maple syrup filled the air, a sensory symphony that amplified her mood. As she set the table, a skip punctuated each step, and her fingers practically vibrated with excitement. The thought of seeing everyone later, sharing laughter and stories, made her heart swell.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed with a text from her friend, Emily. “OMG! Can’t wait for your party tonight!” the message read. A quick reply shot back, “Me neither!” The notification, however, also included a second message. “By the way, I’m also throwing a surprise party for myself tonight… same time, same general area! LOL!” The smile faltered, replaced with a flicker of… something else.
