Gemotions

The familiar crackle of the fireplace, the scent of pine needles, the soft glow of the Christmas lights - everything about the cozy cabin made Richard feel safe and content. He was looking forward to a perfect Christmas. He was humming a carol as he arranged the decorations on the mantle.

He caught sight of his childhood friend, Ben, arriving with a group of people.

"Ben!" he shouted, his voice full of warmth.

Ben looked up, a polite expression on his face. "I'm sorry, who are you?"

The fire seemed to shrink, the lights to lose their luster. The world suddenly felt cold. The warmth in Richard’s chest disappeared.
