"Professor Reynolds is… retiring?" Emily repeated, staring blankly at the email. Then, a slow, delighted smile spread across her face. She felt a sudden lightness, as if a great weight had been lifted.

Her fingers danced on her keyboard, composing a reply to the department head. She chose words carefully, offering polite congratulations, but inside, she was practically giddy.

She thought of the freedom that lay ahead, the chance to finally pursue her research in the direction she wanted. She got up, stretched, and walked over to the window, the world outside suddenly vibrant and full of possibility.
