Gemotions

The vibrant colors of the mosque seemed to taunt him. He stood outside, his hands shoved deep in his pockets, refusing to enter. His sister's laughter, coming from inside, was like a knife twisting in his gut.

He thought of all the times they’d spent together, the shared holidays, the inside jokes. All of it now seemed tainted, corrupted. He felt a bitter taste in his mouth.

He imagined them all inside, happy, content, without him. The image was unbearable. He turned and walked away, the setting sun casting long, accusing shadows behind him.
