The news settled over her like a suffocating shroud. She stared at the email for an eternity, the sterile text blurring through tears that wouldn't fall. The injustice of it all - a burning coal inside her chest.

She went to the kitchen and grabbed a box of cereal, dumping the contents into the sink. She crushed the box, the cardboard yielding easily to her frustrated grip. The milk carton followed, its smooth surface proving equally satisfying to crush.
