He found himself deliberately taking the long way home, avoiding the street where his parents lived. Even the thought of their house, their presence, ignited a spark of inner turmoil. His foot tapped furiously against the cracked sidewalk.

Finally, he stood before the door, the peeling paint a silent commentary on his own life. The sound of his mother’s voice, cheerful and expectant, made him flinch.
