The delay announcement was like a physical blow. A cold wave crashed over Mark. His partner’s anniversary. They had planned a grand surprise. Now, nothing. Just this. He felt a deep, chilling disappointment.

He crossed his arms tightly, a protective gesture against the flood of unpleasant feelings. He watched the other passengers, their faces betraying varying degrees of boredom. He found himself wishing them all the worst possible flights. He wanted them to feel this agony.

He paced the area, unable to settle. He saw a child crying and he wished the child would stop. Everything felt like a provocation, a carefully constructed insult.
