The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” felt like a personal affront. Thomas, lounging against a pillar, watched Eleanor, his ex-girlfriend, walk down the aisle. Her smile was blinding. He found himself wishing she’d trip.

He feigned a polite smile when she locked eyes with him during the ceremony. Later, during the reception, he made sure to avoid her gaze, but couldn't help but notice the way she moved, the way she laughed. A knot tightened in his gut.

He excused himself to the restroom, splashing cold water on his face. The reflection staring back at him was a mask of forced indifference. He needed to get a grip, to pretend this wasn't tearing him apart.
