The moment he saw the name on the list, his blood ran cold. Mr. Abernathy. It had been years, but the memories of that man, of his harsh critiques and perceived favoritism, were still so vibrant. Now, his son, Ben, was going to be exposed to the same treatment.

He felt a familiar tightening in his chest. He could feel the weight of resentment settle on his shoulders. He didn’t want to be around anyone. He needed space.

He went to his home office, closed the door, and began to organize a pile of papers, but they became a jumbled mess as the minutes ticked by. He threw a stapler, which hit the wall. The action helped him settle for only a moment.
