The postman’s footsteps faded away, leaving a silence that felt oppressive. David snatched the mail, his fingers curling with a familiar tension. Bills, junk mail, and then… a card. A cheerful, brightly colored card, the kind you buy at a supermarket. No sender. "Happy Birthday!" it chirped, with a picture of a smiling puppy. His birthday was next week. He tossed it onto the already cluttered kitchen table, the colors mocking him.

He pictured his ex-wife, her blonde hair, her perfect teeth. This was probably her, playing her games. She, who'd had the audacity to move on and be happy. He clenched his fists, the blood rushing into his knuckles.

David slammed his fist on the table, making the card jump. He would make her regret this. He would find a way to unravel her peace, to remind her of everything she'd lost.
