The realization hit Maya like a physical blow. The scholarship, the validation, the future she had envisioned, were all a lie. They were meant for someone else, some girl from a private school with a silver spoon stuck in her mouth.

She sat on her bed, frozen, the room shrinking around her. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. She wanted to destroy everything, to break the fragile facade of her life.

She picked up her phone, her fingers hovering over the contact for the scholarship committee. She wanted to unleash the torrent of venom that threatened to spill out of her. Instead, she threw the phone against the wall. It shattered into pieces.
