“Oh, darling, isn't that just… heavenly?” Her mother gushed, eyes shining. The radio was playing “Lavender Fields,” her first and most treasured song, being covered by a saccharine country singer.

A bitter taste filled her mouth. Her mother's enthusiasm, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a personal betrayal. She stared out the window, the sun mocking her.

Her palms began to sweat. She wanted to scream. She wanted to tell her mother to shut up, to stop pretending she liked it. She wanted to erase the song from existence.
