My hands shook as I reread the message. He was going. My advisor, Dr. Chen, was jumping ship to some prestigious think tank. The audacity. I felt a surge of… something. A corrosive bitterness that spread through my limbs like a poison. The words on the screen blurred, a jumble of characters I could no longer decipher. I wanted to scream, to lash out, to break something.

I walked the long way to the library, kicking at pebbles, scuffing my shoes against the pavement. Inside, I found myself inexplicably drawn to the philosophy section, where I furiously yanked books from the shelves, slamming them back with exaggerated force. Their titles, once sources of comfort, now seemed to taunt me with their complexity, their irrelevance. I didn't care about truth or wisdom anymore. Just about the sheer injustice of it all.
