The red ink on the paper felt like a burn on Amy’s skin. The “D” seemed to scream, mocking her every effort. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm that mirrored the turmoil inside her.

She wanted to tear the grade to pieces, to erase the very existence of the test. She wanted to hurt someone. She swallowed hard, forcing down the impulse.

She walked out into the hall, her vision blurring with unshed tears. She clutched the paper tightly, the edges digging into her palms. She would find a way to fix this, to prove them all wrong.
