The afternoon light cast long shadows as David, deep in thought, was interrupted by a lighthearted voice. "Would you mind if..." The request was for tomatoes. Tomatoes! He barely suppressed a groan.

He had spent weeks cultivating the perfect lawn, a testament to his control and perfectionism. The thought of clumsy, imperfect vegetables, of someone else's carelessness, made his skin crawl. He let out a sigh of disgust.

He waved his hand dismissively. "No," he said, the word a curt dismissal. His gaze fell to the ground, and he couldn't bring himself to meet the neighbor’s eye.
