The silence of the house felt oppressive. Amelia sat at the kitchen table, staring at the drawing. Her niece, Chloe, had included “Twinkle Toes” – her childhood companion – in a picture of them playing in the park. The vibrant colors of the drawing felt like a punch to the gut. The world was so full of color.

She picked at the remnants of her dinner, the food tasting like ash. Across the street, her former partner, Michael, was laughing with his new family. She knew she should be moving on, but every little memory seemed to trigger this deep pang of loss.

She closed her eyes, and let the tears finally fall.
