He found himself pacing the perimeter of his backyard, staring at the construction site. It was a tangible measure of the distance between them. Each brick laid, each beam erected, was another nail in the coffin of their shared future.

The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken words. He couldn't shake the feeling of being utterly adrift. The world seemed to have lost its color, washed in shades of grey.
