The harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop seemed to intensify the throbbing behind Clara's eyes. It was late, and the shop was nearly empty, just the bored clerk and the weight of her grief hanging in the stale air. Her grandfather had always said the ring brought him luck, and it was the first thing her grandmother had taken off when he passed. Finding it here was a gut punch.

She ran a finger along the cold glass, tracing the outline of the familiar setting. Each facet of the diamond seemed to reflect a painful memory, a fleeting smile, a whispered promise. The shopkeeper waited, unimpressed.

“It’s…it’s for my grandmother,” Clara stammered, the words catching in her throat. She had promised to be strong, to be resilient. But seeing that ring, knowing it was lost, was a fresh wound, a raw exposure of her vulnerability.
