"No," whispered Emily, the word barely audible. The email on her screen seemed to vibrate with a cruel energy. The scholarship, the key to her dreams, was gone. Her carefully constructed future, the bright path she'd envisioned, dissolved before her very eyes.

A coldness spread through her, starting at her fingertips and working its way inward. She remained seated at her desk, unable to move. She felt as though she had been cast adrift in a vast and empty ocean.

She stared blankly ahead, watching the sun cast long shadows across her room, the day’s activities continuing to unfold outside of her.
