From her kitchen window, she watched the fence go up, each plank a deliberate act, a conscious decision. The builders were laughing and talking, unaware of the internal tempest raging within her. It was his fence, of course. His desire for a clean break, a definitive line.

She remembered the day she saw the realtor's sign in his yard. She had choked back the words that threatened to spill out. The ache behind her eyes felt like it would never disappear.

She turned away from the window, the image of his smiling face, the life they built together, seared into her memory. The coldness that had settled in her bones since he had left, would not be gone anytime soon.
