The small, beige office felt like a cage. He was stuck, watching his new charge take the reins of a life he once loved. He felt a dull throb behind his eyes, a physical manifestation of his internal turmoil. The young man, full of energy and eager to please, bounced with an enthusiasm he couldn't muster.

He forced a smile, the muscles in his face protesting. “Just… be sure to double-check the figures,” he managed, his voice barely a whisper. The words felt hollow, devoid of any genuine feeling. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture of exhaustion.
