He had to repeat the steps over and over again. Every click of the mouse, every command, was another nail in the coffin of his old life. He felt a constant pressure in his temples, a dull, throbbing headache that refused to go away.

The trainee, eager and chatty, asked questions that he answered mechanically. The cheerful atmosphere in the office seemed to amplify his own desolation. He felt a profound sense of isolation, even amidst the presence of others. He closed his eyes, and the memories came flooding back, each one a fresh wound.

He swallowed hard, forcing back the tears that threatened to spill over. He could feel his control slipping.
