The constant announcements were a torment, each one a stab of fresh pain. The plane had been delayed again, and again. She was supposed to be marrying the love of her life. They were to be married under the Tuscan sun. The wedding would be happening without her.

She sat on the cold floor, pulling her knees up to her chest. She hugged herself, trying to hold herself together. It was a physical manifestation of trying to protect herself. The lights seemed to dim, reflecting the hollowness inside.

She bit her lip so hard she tasted blood. Every fibre of her being ached. The world seemed to have tilted on its axis, leaving her stranded in a desolate wasteland of lost hopes. She couldn't feel her legs, as if she were made of lead.
