He was talking, laughing easily, with someone at the buffet table, oblivious to her presence. It was as if their history, their shared laughter, their tears, had been erased. Sarah watched from afar, a strange hollowness spreading through her.

The room seemed to shrink, the chatter of the guests a dull roar in her ears. She picked at a tiny cucumber sandwich, her appetite gone. It felt like every cell in her body was screaming.

She wanted to call out his name, just to see him look at her, acknowledge her. But the words caught in her throat.

She knew she would need to leave soon.
